Rep. Thomas Massie Applauds MIT for Rejecting Trump Administration’s ‘Bribe’

Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky has commended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for its decision to reject the Trump administration’s recent proposals. He criticized the administration’s efforts to influence how universities operate. Massie expressed his views through a social media post, emphasizing the independence of higher education.

MIT’s Rejection of Trump Administration Proposals

On a Friday in October, MIT made history by becoming the first university in the U.S. to dismiss the White House’s proposals that tied federal funding to specific conditions. These conditions included limitations on international student enrollment and restrictions on transgender participation in sports aligned with their gender identity.

Massie’s Comments

In his statement, Massie said, “The surest way to screw up the world’s best technical school is to let feds tell them how to run it.” He praised MIT for its stand against what he termed a “bribe” from the executive branch.

Response from MIT

MIT President Sally Kornbluth released a statement maintaining the institution’s commitment to independent thought and open competition. She stated, “America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence.” Kornbluth concluded that MIT could not support the proposed federal approach, which she believed undermined these values.

Context of Federal Proposals

The Department of Education had previously sent a memo to nine major U.S. universities, outlining conditions under which they could receive priority federal funding. A spokesperson from the White House clarified that while signing the compact would provide a competitive advantage, it was not mandatory for all universities.

Massie’s Role in GOP Dissent

Under the second Trump administration, Massie has distanced himself from mainstream Republican viewpoints. He has taken bold steps, such as partnering with Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, to advocate for transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case. Together, they introduced the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which calls for public release of all unclassified records related to the Epstein investigation.

Challenges Faced by Massie

Massie’s opposition to various Trump policies, including spending proposals and wartime powers without Congressional approval, has attracted criticism from within his party. This stance even led Trump to label Massie a “grandstander” and threaten a primary challenge against him in upcoming elections.

  • Institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
