McCann Family Testifies Against Woman Claiming to Be Missing Madeleine

The ongoing case surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has taken a new turn as her family testifies against a woman claiming to be their missing daughter. This case involves Julia Wandel, a Polish woman accused of stalking the McCann family while asserting herself as Madeleine.

Julia Wandel’s Claims and Arrest

Julia Wandel, who first emerged with claims in 2023, shared various social media posts allegedly proving her identity as Madeleine. These posts mainly included comparisons of her physical appearance to the missing girl.

In February 2024, Wandel was arrested on charges of stalking the McCann family. She is accused of incessantly contacting family members and making uninvited visits to their residence in the United Kingdom.

Stalking Allegations

Wandel’s stalking charges involve four members of the McCann family: Gerry, Kate, Sean, and Amelie. The allegations include:

  • Repeated unwanted visits in May and December of 2023.
  • Over 50 phone calls per day to Kate McCann.
  • Numerous messages sent to Amelie McCann on social media.

Family Response in Court

During the trial, Amelie McCann described feeling compelled to respond to Wandel’s messages. She testified, saying, “I didn’t think it was a criminal offense.” Amelie recounted how Wandel attempted to convince her of shared memories from the night Madeleine disappeared. This disturbing behavior has taken a toll on the McCann family, particularly their mother, Kate.

Sean McCann provided a written statement, expressing his distress and noting the need to alter his online presence to avoid further contact. He labeled Wandel’s claims as upsetting and disrespectful.

Kate McCann’s Emotional Testimony

Kate McCann took the stand covered by a curtain to avoid seeing Wandel. She shared her experience with Wandel contacting her and leaving numerous voice messages claiming to be her daughter. Kate revealed that she discovered Wandel had been contacting Amelie since January 2024, which made her decide to involve the police.

In December 2024, Wandel made a personal visit to the McCann residence, demanding a DNA test and claiming to be their daughter. Kate described this encounter as devastating, stating she felt invaded and distressed in her own home.

Legal Proceedings and Public Reaction

Alongside Julia Wandel, a supporter named Karen Spragg faces similar stalking charges. Both women have denied the allegations. Polish authorities have also disputed Wandel’s claims after she gained significant media attention.

The McCann family continues to seek truth regarding their daughter’s disappearance, which occurred on May 3, 2007, in Praia da Luz, Portugal. As they marked the 18th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, they reiterated their commitment to leaving “no stone unturned” in their search efforts.

In the U.K., the laws surrounding stalking can impose severe penalties, with the maximum potential sentence being ten years for cases causing serious alarm or distress.
