BC Hydro Outage to Impact Over 3,300 Customers

A planned power outage will affect over 3,300 BC Hydro customers in Fort Nelson and Prophet River First Nation. Scheduled for October 19, the outage will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. This necessity arises from upgrade work at the Wescup Substation.
Details of the BC Hydro Outage
The outage will impact a total of 3,386 customers. BC Hydro has been performing maintenance at the substation for three months in preparation for winter. This work is crucial for ensuring the safe return to normal operating status.
Safety Measures
According to Dave Mosure, BC Hydro’s northern community relations coordinator, the equipment must be de-energized during the process for crew safety. A previous outage was conducted in the summer to isolate certain equipment.
Communication with Customers
- All affected customers will receive notifications via automated phone calls or emails.
- Postcards are typically mailed to inform residents, but this will likely not occur due to ongoing postal worker strikes.
Additional Outages in the Peace Region
Besides the primary outage in Fort Nelson, additional smaller outages are planned across the Peace region:
- Fort St. John – October 15
- Chetwynd – October 14
- Dawson Creek – October 21
