NFL Evaluates Giants’ Compliance with Concussion Protocol

The NFL is currently reviewing compliance with its concussion protocol regarding New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. This follows an incident during the Giants’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The review will be conducted in collaboration with the NFL Players Association.

NFL Concussion Protocol Review Details

The review process was announced on Friday. It focuses on how Dart was evaluated for a concussion after a significant hit during the third quarter. Coach Brian Daboll was seen checking the injury tent while Dart was being assessed, raising questions about protocol adherence.

Incident Overview

  • Date of Incident: Thursday night during a game against the Eagles.
  • Key Players Involved: Jaxson Dart, Coach Brian Daboll, Patrick Johnson, Azeez Ojulari.
  • Actions Taken: Dart was evaluated in the injury tent after sustaining a hit.

Dart experienced discomfort after being sacked, which prompted the concussion evaluation. Daboll expressed impatience with the evaluation process, wanting Dart to return if he was fit to play. He later acknowledged his error in trying to access the tent.

Coach’s Accountability

Daboll has publicly apologized to the team physician for his impatience. He emphasized the importance of adhering to concussion protocols while ensuring player safety. “I would never want a player back on the field without being ready,” he stated.

Concussion Protocol Guidelines

According to Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer, strict rules govern who can remain in the tent during evaluations. These include:

  • A team physician
  • An independent specialist
  • A team athletic trainer
  • The player being evaluated

Importantly, the presence of coaches or other players in the tent is prohibited.

Player Reactions

Giants rookie Cam Skattebo also entered the tent, attempting to reassure Dart during his evaluation. Dart, expressing frustration over repeated interruptions due to concussion protocols, acknowledged the necessity of proper procedures. “I was just trying to get back on the field fast,” he said.

This incident marks at least the third time Dart has faced interruptions for concussion evaluations, highlighting the ongoing challenges of balancing player safety with game participation.
