Veterans of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry Reject Soulslike for Stupid Never Dies

GPTRACK50 has revealed that their upcoming zombie action RPG, titled Stupid Never Dies, is set to launch in Fall 2026. The announcement followed an exciting live demo event in Los Angeles. Game director Eiichiro Sasaki, known for his work on Resident Evil 6, and producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, recognized for his contributions to multiple titles in the Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Dino Crisis franchises, shared insights about the game with Famitsu.
Gameplay Mechanics and Features
Stupid Never Dies centers on a unique character named Davy, a low-tier zombie boy. His quest is to resurrect his crush, Julia, a frozen human girl. The game emphasizes fast-paced action, with players participating in timed dungeon runs that involve defeating enemies, collecting peculiar items, and leveling up.
Combat Styles and Abilities
A key feature in the game is the “Style Eat” mechanic. This allows Davy to absorb the abilities of defeated enemies by consuming their cores. Players can unlock up to ten different combat styles, including werewolves, vampires, and harpies, in addition to Davy’s initial zombie style. Strategic gameplay is encouraged as players can equip two combat styles at once and switch between them in real time.
Advanced Gameplay Dynamics
The game introduces an “Overtech” feature that enables players to enhance Davy’s abilities with various weapons and implants, independent of his monster transformations. Additionally, players can utilize a burst mechanic. By successfully landing attacks, the Davy Burst gauge fills up. Once activated, this enables Davy to experience a significant boost in stats.
Challenge and Accessibility
Kobayashi has emphasized that while Stupid Never Dies poses challenges, it is designed to be accessible, stating that it caters to players with various skill levels. The average playtime to complete the game is estimated to be between 20 to 30 hours.
During the discussions, both Kobayashi and Sasaki addressed the rumors surrounding the game being classified as a “soulslike” title. Kobayashi clarified that the development team intentionally avoided that genre, aiming instead for a balance of technical skill and tactical gameplay.
Sasaki highlighted that although players will reset certain aspects of progression upon death or completing dungeons, numerous abilities will carry on. This design choice aims to provide players a sense of continuous growth throughout their journey.
Conclusion
As development reaches around 90% completion, Stupid Never Dies is gearing up for a release on PC via Steam and PS5. Enthusiasts of the zombie action RPG genre can look forward to this innovative title in Fall 2026.
