Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch, classified as “yellow,” for Calgary, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and nearby regions. This warning will be in effect on Tuesday, indicating that conditions are ripe for the formation of severe thunderstorms.
Severe Thunderstorm Conditions
The national weather agency reports that thunderstorms are likely to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening. These storms may bring:
- Strong wind gusts
- Large hail
- Heavy rain
- A slight possibility of tornado activity
In southwestern Alberta, temperatures are predicted to reach the mid-20s Celsius on Tuesday afternoon. This warmth contributes to the unstable conditions necessary for thunderstorm formation.
Timing and Impact
Drew Stremick, a weather specialist from Global Calgary, notes that Calgary and northern regions may experience rainfall starting early Tuesday afternoon. The most intense storms are expected around 4 p.m., particularly affecting areas like Cochrane, Airdrie, and the northern parts of Calgary.
Forecasted Winds
Wind gusts are a significant concern, especially in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, where speeds could reach up to 80 kilometers per hour. These winds may be strong enough to:
- Damage trees and buildings
- Overturn vehicles
In Calgary, wind gusts are projected to hit 60 kilometers per hour before decreasing to around 20 kilometers per hour by Tuesday evening.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain aware of the weather conditions throughout the day as storms approach. Preparedness is key to ensuring safety during severe weather events.
