Lightning Hazard Precautions
With thunderstorms come lightning risks. Lightning strikes the United States around 25 million times each year, predominantly in the summer months. These strikes lead to approximately 20 fatalities annually.
When a thunderstorm approaches, follow these safety measures:
- Have a plan to reach safe shelter.
- If thunder is heard, seek immediate shelter indoors.
- Avoid using corded phones, electrical devices, plumbing, and windows.
- Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last lightning strike.
Driving During Storms
Driving in rainy conditions can be challenging. To ensure safety:
- Always turn on your headlights for improved visibility.
- Avoid puddles and flooded areas.
- Keep a safe distance from larger vehicles that may create spray.
Be particularly cautious of hydroplaning, which occurs when a vehicle loses traction on wet surfaces. To prevent hydroplaning:
- Reduce your speed in the rain.
- Check your tire tread before driving.
If hydroplaning occurs, ease off the accelerator and turn into the skid to regain control. Brake gently as needed, and avoid sudden movements.
Stay alert as the severe thunderstorm continues to move through Brunswick and Columbus counties, and prioritize safety during this weather event.
