Carney Asserts No Single Country Will Define New Global Order Before G7

During a recent visit to Ireland, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that the new global order cannot rely on a single country or institution for solutions. This statement came before the upcoming G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.
Global Cooperation at the G7 Summit
Carney remarked on the evolving dynamics of international relations. He stated that leaders must articulate their own needs and pursue cooperative efforts tailored to their citizens’ welfare. “The strands of a new world order could be woven at the upcoming summit,” he said.
Addressing Varied Agendas Among Allies
Despite potential conflicting agendas, Carney expressed confidence in the ability of G7 nations to navigate differences. “There will be issues where some partners hold more extreme views than others,” he acknowledged.
On the role of the United States, Carney highlighted areas of alignment, particularly regarding child safety and artificial intelligence regulation. He noted that Canada is committed to taking measures for child safety, emphasizing a proactive approach rather than a laissez-faire attitude.
Legislation Focusing on Online Harms
Recently, Canada introduced Bill C-34, targeting online safety for children. This legislation aims to restrict social media access for individuals under 16 and regulate AI chatbots. Several countries, following Australia’s example, are moving towards implementing age restrictions on social media platforms.
Privacy Protection Initiatives
Alongside Bill C-34, Canada is preparing a new privacy bill aimed at safeguarding children’s data. It will include measures to prevent the use of Canadians’ data for surveillance pricing.
AI Regulation and International Relations
Carney also addressed the recent actions taken by the U.S. regarding AI. President Trump’s decision to block certain AI models from foreign nationals prompted discussions on the importance of diversifying AI model dependencies. “The situation highlights a need for caution regarding over-reliance,” he stated.
Setting the Agenda for the G7
At the G7 meeting, key topics will include AI standards, regulations, and responsibilities. Carney noted the necessity of placing people at the center of technological developments. He is keen on forming ad-hoc coalitions based on issue relevance and intends to seek effective partnerships.
Geopolitical Context of the G7 Summit
Geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning the war in Iran, will also dominate discussions. Carney called for efforts towards establishing a ceasefire and durable peace in the region. He believes that the G7’s role is crucial in fostering progress.
While trade discussions will occur, Carney downplayed expectations of direct talks with U.S. President Trump. Recent comments indicated Trump is not looking to renew the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) ahead of its extension deadline.
Ultimately, Carney remains optimistic about the potential for collaboration at the G7, as nations work to shape a balanced approach in a complex global landscape.
