Alonso Hints at Final F1 Race with Barcelona Exit

Fernando Alonso has hinted that the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix may mark his final appearance at this iconic circuit before he retires from Formula 1. The race track is scheduled to return to the calendar in 2028, hosting Grands Prix in 2028, 2030, and 2032 after previous events since its debut in 1991.
Alonso Reflects on His Career
Alonso, who currently drives for Aston Martin, has been candid about his future in Formula 1. With his contract set to expire at the end of the current season, he acknowledges that fatherhood has altered his perspective on racing, yet he remains passionate about continuing in motorsports.
Special Weekend Ahead
As Alonso prepares for this weekend’s race, he expressed the significance of the event. “It’s going to be a special weekend. This is probably my last Barcelona race in Formula 1, so I want to say thanks to everyone,” he stated.
- 23 total Grands Prix have been held at the Barcelona circuit.
- Alonso secured victories here in 2006 and 2013.
- He recently scored his team’s first point of the season at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Despite acknowledging that he may not be competitive this weekend, Alonso aims to savor the experience. He remarked, “I will try to enjoy the weekend… it has always been a celebration when we come to Barcelona.” His sentiment reflects the numerous magical moments he has experienced at this venue.
Future Uncertain
When asked about his prospects for being on the grid during the next race in Barcelona, he remained uncertain. “I don’t have anything in mind. After summer, I will take the decision to continue or not,” he explained.
Alonso emphasized that each race this season could potentially be his last. He mentioned events in Australia, China, and Monaco as examples, reinforcing the idea that he approaches each competition with a sense of finality, especially since Barcelona will not host a race next year.
As this weekend approaches, fans will be eager to witness Alonso in action, possibly one last time at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
