Rangers to Discuss Derek McInnes Replacing Danny Röhl as Manager

Rangers are set to engage in discussions with Derek McInnes regarding the managerial position, following Danny Röhl’s potential move to RB Salzburg. The club has officially contacted Hearts to negotiate permission to speak with McInnes, a former Rangers player.

Discussion of Derek McInnes Replacing Danny Röhl as Manager

McInnes, aged 54, previously declined the opportunity to manage Rangers in 2017. He has had a successful tenure at Hearts, where he led the team to a second-place finish in his first season at Tynecastle. Hearts narrowly missed the league title, falling short to Celtic on the final match day.

Current Manager Situation

Röhl is reportedly nearing an agreement to take over as head coach at RB Salzburg, filling the role of Daniel Beichler. He joined Rangers last October and has two years remaining on his contract. The team was in sixth place when Röhl assumed the managerial position, but he managed to propel the squad into the title race, ultimately finishing third.

  • Managerial Tenure: Röhl took over from Russell Martin and helped elevate team performance.
  • Achievements: Led Rangers to a third-place finish in the Premiership and progressed in cup competitions.

Changes at Rangers

Rangers are in the midst of a squad overhaul as they prepare for the upcoming season. Club officials, including Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and CEO Jim Gillespie, are currently in Boston to watch Haiti compete against Scotland at the World Cup. Notably, Hearts’ chief executive, Andrew McKinlay, is also present as part of the Scottish FA delegation.

Summer Transfers and Squad Enhancements

The club’s restructuring includes key positions such as executive director Fraser Thornton, technical director Dan Purdy, and consultant Stig Inge Bjørnebye, all collaborating with the coaching staff to enhance the squad. The first significant signing for the summer is Lawrence Shankland, who joined Rangers from Hearts on a two-year deal, with an option for an additional year. He arrived at Ibrox after triggering a release clause, having scored 20 goals last season.

Röhl’s Coaching Journey

Before arriving at Rangers, Röhl’s coaching career was marked by various positions at prestigious clubs. He started at RB Leipzig, eventually becoming an assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl. His journey included a pivotal role at Southampton and later at Bayern Munich under Hansi Flick, contributing to their Bundesliga and Champions League victories in 2020.

Röhl’s first managerial role began in October 2023 with Sheffield Wednesday, where he successfully guided the team to Championship safety. His recent stint at Ibrox has been characterized by organizational changes and performance improvements despite a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.
