Canada’s Yellamaraju Reaches PGA Tour Thanks to YouTube

Canadian golfer Sudarshan Yellamaraju is making waves in the professional golf scene. The 24-year-old recently reached the PGA Tour, showcasing an impressive journey fueled by determination and untraditional training methods, including YouTube tutorials.
Sudarshan Yellamaraju’s Early Life
Yellamaraju was born in India and moved to Winnipeg, Canada, when he was a child. His interest in golf sparked while watching it on television, despite his father not being a golfer himself. At age six, he began playing golf. He utilized rental clubs to practice indoors during harsh Winnipeg winters.
A Unique Training Approach
Rather than hiring coaches, Yellamaraju leaned on online resources. He watched YouTube videos of professional golfers, studying their swings and techniques. This self-directed learning proved effective for him. He frequently experimented with his swing based on what he observed.
Breaking into Competitions
Yellamaraju entered his first golf tournament at age nine, where he scored 101. However, that would be the last time he broke 100. He continuously improved, and by age 11, his family moved to Mississauga, Ontario, for better golfing opportunities. In his junior career, he collected multiple tournament victories, including winning the Ontario Men’s Amateur in 2017 at age 16.
Climbing the Ranks
Choosing to bypass college golf, Yellamaraju entered qualifying events for what is now the PGA Tour Americas. His performances there allowed him to secure a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour, the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit. In 2022, he achieved significant success by winning on the Korn Ferry Tour, which earned him PGA Tour membership.
Debuting on the PGA Tour
Yellamaraju made an impressive impact in his rookie PGA Tour season. His standout moment came during the Players Championship, where he finished fifth, earning $925,000 in just that event. As of now, he has secured 13 cuts out of 16 events, accumulating $2,267,877 in earnings.
A Different Support System
Unlike many professional golfers who employ entire teams of coaches, Yellamaraju mostly relies on his caddie. He has no formal coach, instead trusting his own instincts and the insights gained from his father, who has a background in cricket.
Acceptance and Growth
Yellamaraju has quickly garnered the respect of fellow Canadian players on the Tour. Corey Conners, a two-time Tour winner, praised Yellamaraju’s focus and overall skill, noting his potential to climb leaderboards further.
Future Prospects
Yellamaraju’s rise to fame has increased interest in his journey and performance. Fans now recognize him, urging him from the sidelines at events. His story serves as an inspiration to young golfers, illustrating that passion and innovative training can lead to success in the challenging world of professional golf.
