Officials Extend Air India Crash Inquiry Timeline

Investigators are extending the timeline for the inquiry into the Air India crash that occurred on June 12, 2025. This tragic incident claimed the lives of 250 individuals, including 241 passengers and crew members onboard and 19 people on the ground.
Investigation Update from India’s AAIB
On the first anniversary of the disaster, India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) issued a statement. It acknowledged significant advancements in analyzing evidence tied to the crash, while stating that the investigation remains ongoing.
Details of the Crash
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad, aiming for London but tragically crashed approximately 6 kilometers from the airport. The aircraft impacted a building used for doctor accommodations at Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College and Civil Hospital, resulting in an explosion.
- Total fatalities: 250
- Passengers and crew: 241
- Ground fatalities: 19
- Indian nationals on board: 169
- British nationals on board: 53
- Survivor: Viswashkumar Ramesh, from Leicester
Investigative Process and Timeline
The AAIB emphasized the thorough nature of the investigation, involving technical and operational assessments. The agency has focused on various factors, including aircraft systems, flight recorder data, and maintenance records. The meticulous examination of all evidence is still in progress.
The AAIB clarified that the final report will be released after completing all investigative activities and necessary international consultations. They reiterated that the primary goal of the investigation is to improve aviation safety through lessons learned, rather than assigning blame.
Anticipated Conclusion of the Inquiry
Despite previous expectations that the report could come soon, public doubts have surfaced over its timely release. Earlier in May, India’s civil aviation minister suggested the investigation was nearing its conclusion, indicating a report could be expected within a month. However, the AAIB’s recent update indicates further analysis is needed.
