Accessing MetLife Stadium for World Cup: Boats, $98 Trains, VIP Buses

As the World Cup approaches, transportation to MetLife Stadium has become a key focus for officials in New Jersey. New Jersey Transit is preparing by implementing a comprehensive contingency plan.
Transportation Options for World Cup Attendees
To ensure smooth access to MetLife Stadium, NJ Transit will have two boats available for transportation should rail systems be disrupted. Each boat can accommodate 600 passengers. Additionally, hundreds of buses are ready, fortifying the public transport framework between New York Penn Station and the stadium.
Pricing Structure
- The fare for rail service has been set at $98, significantly higher than the usual $12.90.
- This price was initially set at $150 but was reduced thanks to sponsorships.
- Governor Mikie Sherrill emphasized that these costs will not be transferred to local commuters or taxpayers.
FIFA has described the pricing as “chilling,” prompting Governor Sherrill to question the organization’s commitment to supporting local public transit systems, especially given the projected $11 billion revenue from the tournament.
Historical Context and Concerns
Concerns around the reliability of public transport are heightened due to past experiences, particularly the transit chaos during the Super Bowl in 2014. In light of these issues, Governor Sherrill plans to take the train to the match between Brazil and Morocco, aiming to utilize the most efficient travel method available.
New Jersey’s Role in the World Cup
New Jersey’s involvement extends beyond hosting games; Governor Sherrill has expressed interest in performing the coin toss for one of the matches. This gesture symbolizes New Jersey’s prominent role in the World Cup, which will feature eight games, including the final.
Notable figures such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul are also expected to be present at the matches.
Parking and Capacity Challenges
While MetLife Stadium typically offers 23,000 parking spaces, this number will decrease considerably due to heightened security measures during the World Cup. It is estimated that approximately 40,000 fans will be using rail services, although ticket sales have reached over 14,000 so far, which includes 4,000 tickets for staff.
Additional Transportation Measures
The New York/New Jersey host committee is facilitating additional transport options. A round-trip bus shuttle service priced at $20 will be available, with 18,000 seats on non-school days and 12,000 on student weekdays.
- As of Thursday, over 12,000 shuttle tickets had been sold for the upcoming Brazil vs. Morocco game.
- Designated lanes and buses will prioritize FIFA-approved vehicles and shuttle buses, enhancing transportation efficiency.
The preparations aim to alleviate potential transportation hurdles, ensuring that fans can enjoy a seamless World Cup experience at MetLife Stadium.
