Kucherov Receives Surprise Hart Trophy at Lightning Practice Facility

Nikita Kucherov received a surprise Hart Trophy at the Tampa Bay Lightning’s practice facility. The trophy is awarded annually to the NHL’s most valuable player, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Kucherov’s Surprise Ceremony

Phil Pritchard, Keeper of the Cup, transported the trophy from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto to Tampa. He utilized a combination of a trolley, jet ski, and convertible to deliver the award personally. Upon arrival, the trophy was presented to Kucherov in a dimly lit room, resting on a table.

Kucherov’s Reaction

Expressing gratitude, Kucherov stated, “Thanks for this honor. Just really grateful for my teammates, coaches, my family. This means a lot.”

Record-Setting Performance

This season, Kucherov recorded an impressive 130 points, ranking second in the NHL. His stats include 44 goals and 86 assists across 76 games. He achieved a points-per-game average of 1.71, with a plus-43 rating, which ties him for third among all players. Kucherov tallied points in 60 of those games, featuring 40 games with at least two points.

Kucherov outperformed Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid by just 10 points and edged out Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon for the Hart Trophy, marking his second win of this accolade.

Acknowledgments and Awards

This season, Kucherov was also a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, which recognizes the most outstanding player in the NHL as voted by peers. Connor McDavid won the Lindsay Award, announced on Sunday.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper participated in the surprise event. He was previously honored with the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. Additionally, goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy received the Vezina Trophy for the league’s top goalie.

Kucherov’s Career Achievements

Cooper emphasized Kucherov’s relentless drive for improvement, stating, “One of the great things that makes ‘Kuch’ Kuch is he’s never satisfied.” Kucherov has received the Ted Lindsay Award on two occasions, the Art Ross Trophy three times, and secured the Stanley Cup twice.

Selected by Tampa Bay as the 58th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Kucherov has amassed 1,124 points (401 goals, 723 assists) over 879 regular-season games and 177 points (54 goals, 123 assists) in 159 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. He led all postseason scorers during the Lightning’s Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021.
