Elder Tad R. Callister, Former Sunday School Leader, Passes at 79

Elder Tad R. Callister, a prominent figure in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 79. His extensive service to the church and commitment to his faith were hallmarks of his life.

Life and Service

Born on December 17, 1945, in Glendale, Los Angeles, California, Tad Richards Callister was the son of Reed and Norinne Richards Callister. He served as a missionary from 1965 to 1967 in the Eastern Atlantic States Mission. On December 20, 1968, he married Kathryn Louise Saporiti in the Los Angeles California Temple. Together, they raised six children.

Church Leadership Roles

Elder Callister held various leadership positions within the church. He served as president of the Canada Toronto East Mission and was called as a General Authority Seventy in April 2008. He worked in this capacity until April 2014, including time as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy from October 2011 to April 2014.

In April 2014, he became the Sunday School general president, guiding religious instruction for Latter-day Saints aged 12 and older worldwide. He served in this role until April 6, 2019.

Defending Faith and Principles

Elder Callister was devoted to defending his faith and the principles of the United States Constitution. He emphasized the importance of the doctrines of the church, making significant statements during general conference addresses, including solemn testimonies about the Book of Mormon.

  • 2009: Declared that salvation is found only through the teachings restored by Joseph Smith.
  • 2017: Asserted that the Book of Mormon is the compelling witness of Jesus Christ’s divinity.

Academic and Professional Background

His academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Brigham Young University in 1968. In 1971, he completed a juris doctorate from the University of California–Los Angeles Law School, followed by a master’s degree in tax law from New York University Law School in 1972. He practiced tax law and worked as an attorney with Callister & Callister prior to assuming his church leadership roles.

Legacy

Elder Callister was a prolific author, with works such as “The Infinite Atonement” contributing to theological discourse. His leadership experience also included serving as a bishop, stake president, Area Seventy, and regional representative, among other roles.
