World Cup Participation and Rankings
Italy, ranking 12th, is the highest-ranked nation absent from the World Cup. Conversely, New Zealand is at the bottom of the rankings with a position of 85th among participating teams. Russia, banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, is currently ranked 35th.
Preparation for the World Cup
Argentina has prepared for the tournament with friendly victories over Honduras and Iceland. France’s warm-up included a defeat against Ivory Coast, while Spain participated in a draw with Iraq. These outcomes have contributed to Argentina’s return to the top of the rankings, marking the first time since July 2025.
Understanding FIFA Rankings
The FIFA world rankings are calculated using the Elo model, devised by physicist Arpad Elo. This system assigns scores based on match outcomes, with points added for wins and deducted for losses. Factors such as team strength and match significance also influence point adjustments.
World Cup Group Formation
For the expanded World Cup featuring 48 teams, nations were divided into four pots of 12 based on their rankings. The top nine ranked teams joined the three host nations in Pot One. The lowest-ranked teams, including those from the playoffs, were placed in Pot Four for the group draws.
