FBI Arrests DOJ’s Top ‘Most Wanted Fraudster’

In a significant development, Said Abdullahi Ereg, the first individual listed on the Justice Department’s “Most Wanted Fraudster” list, surrendered to authorities in Minneapolis on Wednesday. He is accused of embezzling approximately $4 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Allegations Against Said Abdullahi Ereg
The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, stated that Ereg falsely claimed to provide meals to underprivileged children while allegedly misusing government funds to support a lavish lifestyle. His operations included running a grocery store and deli in Minneapolis. Ereg was enrolled in the program through Feeding Our Future, a Minnesota nonprofit dedicated to providing meals to those in need.
- Alleged Amount Stolen: $4 million
- Meal Claims: More than 1.4 million meals served
- Total Payments Received: $4.2 million
Legal Proceedings
In 2024, Ereg was formally charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. His name was added to the “Most Wanted Fraudster” list just six days prior to his surrender.
Significance of the Arrest
This arrest marks a historic moment as it is the first instance of someone being apprehended from the newly established “Most Wanted Fraudster” list. This initiative was announced last week by federal officials, including acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, alongside a task force aimed at combating fraud.
The announcement, made during a visit to Ohio, highlighted broader efforts to address fraudulent activities, including other alleged wrongdoing in the state. The recent actions underscore a commitment to tackling fraud and holding accountable those who exploit government programs.
