Suspension of Free Electric Vehicle Chargers for Stormont MLAs

Electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Stormont Assembly members have been temporarily suspended amid plans for a new payment system. This decision follows revelations that MLAs have been utilizing free charging points at Parliament Buildings, prompting scrutiny regarding their travel expenses.
Details of the Suspension
The suspension applies to charging stations located in the upper car park of Parliament Buildings. In contrast, visitors to this facility have been required to pay for EV charging. MLAs are entitled to a travel allowance that can exceed £6,500 annually for commuting to Stormont.
Announcement by the Speaker
On a recent Monday, Speaker Edwin Poots addressed the Assembly, stating that the existing free access to EV chargers would remain suspended until a new charging system is established. During the Assembly Commission meeting that morning, it was resolved to implement a payment system for all EV chargers managed by the Commission.
Key Outcomes from the Assembly Meeting
- The new EV charging system will require payment from all users.
- Data retention arrangements are set to be reviewed.
- Discussions with MLAs currently utilizing EV chargers will be initiated to arrange reimbursement.
Mr. Poots indicated that the earlier system, introduced in 2015, had operational decisions that did not involve Commission members. This has been a point of confusion, as many MLAs were unaware of how to properly use the chargers.
Public Concerns Addressed
Speaker Poots acknowledged the legitimate concerns raised by the public. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by Commission members in reaching a unanimous agreement to tackle the issue. The Assembly is committed to ensuring transparency and fairness in the use of EV chargers moving forward.
