Kiara Romero Secures Low-Amateur Honors, Gains Crucial LEAP Points at U.S. Open

Kiara Romero made headlines this week at the U.S. Women’s Open by securing low amateur honors and crucial LEAP points at Riviera. Following her impressive performance at Erin Hills last year, where she set a record for the lowest final-round score by an amateur, she continued to excel on the course this year.

Record-Breaking Performance

On Sunday, Romero shot a solid 3-under 68. This score positioned her inside the top 10, giving her a chance to compete in next year’s tournament at Inverness. “I went out there, aiming to shoot as many birdies as possible,” she said. “This course was particularly challenging for a Sunday round, but I focused on making my best shots.”

Impact on LPGA Membership

Romero’s performance also brought her closer to qualifying for the LPGA Tour. After this week’s competition, she earned two points in the LPGA’s Elite Amateur Pathway (LEAP) program, raising her total to 16 points. To qualify for LPGA membership, she needs 20 points. Next week, she will compete in the Curtis Cup, where she can earn an additional two points.

  • Current LEAP points: 16
  • Points needed for LPGA card: 4
  • Upcoming events: Curtis Cup, Arnold Palmer Cup

Romero expressed her pride in her progress, attributing her success to hard work and dedication. “This event helped me gain more points without feeling pressured,” she noted. “It was a great experience, especially with my coach by my side.”

Other Notable Amateurs

Maria Jose Marin, an Arkansas junior and winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, had an opportunity to tie Romero for low amateur honors but missed her par putt on the final hole. Nevertheless, she also earned two LEAP points, bringing her total to 15.

Other amateurs who participated this week included:

  • Aphrodite Deng (T-17)
  • Asterisk Talley (T-22)
  • Farah O’Keefe (T-34)

Looking Ahead

Romero, Talley, and O’Keefe will represent Team USA at the upcoming Curtis Cup. “I’m excited to play for my country, especially since it’s my first time in this competition,” Romero stated. “It’s fun to play on a team and represent our country together.”

With her recent success, Kiara Romero is on the path to turning professional, potentially joining the LPGA Tour as soon as this summer. This week’s low amateur honor at the U.S. Women’s Open was a significant step towards achieving her goal.
