McLaren Updates on Norris’ Car After Monaco FP2 Halt

McLaren recently reported an electrical issue that halted Lando Norris’ car during the second practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix. This incident occurred at the Nouvelle Chicane early in the session, placing Norris at a disadvantage as his team approaches their significant 1000th Grand Prix weekend.
McLaren’s Response to Norris’ Stoppage
After the practice session, Rob Marshall, McLaren’s Chief Technical Officer and Chief Designer, shared updates concerning the electrical problem. Although specific details remain unclear, Marshall stated that the car experienced a complete shutdown.
- Electrical issue identified as the cause of the stoppage
- Investigation ongoing to determine exact nature of the problem
Performance Insights from FP2
With Norris sidelined, Oscar Piastri took the lead as McLaren’s only representative in practice, finishing seventh on the timesheets. He lagged behind competitors such as Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes by approximately one second.
Marshall expressed optimism, indicating that improvements could be made: “We struggled in the initial part of the lap, but we became more competitive in the latter sections.” He suggested the fluctuations in performance could be linked to tire temperature and emphasized the need for further adjustments.
Piastri’s Reflections
Piastri also provided his perspective on the team’s performance, acknowledging it was not as competitive as desired. He commented on the day’s challenges, noting:
- Progress was made from a 1.5 seconds deficit to 1 second off the pace
- They anticipated Ferrari’s speed, aiming to close the gap
- Highlighting the need for significant changes to enhance performance
Looking ahead, Piastri remained hopeful that the team could uncover more speed before the race, although he admitted that they lacked concrete strategies at that moment.
