Transport for Wales Set to Launch New Tram-Train Service

Transport for Wales is excited to announce the upcoming launch of its inaugural tram-train service this summer. This innovative service will connect Pontypridd to Cardiff Bay, enhancing transportation in the region.

Key Features of the New Tram-Train Service

The introduction of tram-trains marks a significant milestone for the South Wales Metro program. The primary objective is to create faster and more frequent links between Cardiff and the Valleys. Here are some highlights:

  • Fully electric tram-trains will operate on this newly established route.
  • The service is expected to decrease travel times between Cardiff and Treherbert, Aberdare, and Merthyr to approximately 50 minutes.
  • Trains will run every 15 minutes, with phased changes to the schedule.

Modern Facilities for Passengers

In response to passenger needs, the new tram-trains will not include onboard toilets. To compensate, Transport for Wales is making significant upgrades across its network:

  • Installation of nine new station toilets.
  • Refurbishment of five existing toilet facilities.
  • Accessible amenities, including wheelchair access, support rails, and baby changing facilities.
  • Sanitary product dispensers and help points for convenience.

Safety and Monitoring Enhancements

In addition to improved restroom facilities, important safety upgrades are underway. These include:

  • Enhanced station lighting.
  • Installation of CCTV with live monitoring from the Integrated Control Centre at Taff’s Well.

Passengers using the tram-train services can rest assured they will be no more than 20 minutes away from a toilet anywhere in the network.

Progress Towards Launch

As the launch date approaches, TfW is in the final stages of preparations. Driver training is nearing completion, and regular test runs are conducted to ensure readiness. Dan Tipper, Chief Infrastructure Officer at Transport for Wales, stated, “Our teams are working extremely hard as we move into the final stages ahead of introducing our first tram-trains into service.”

The tram-train service promises to deliver a faster and more efficient transportation solution for communities across the Valleys, offering a true pay-as-you-go experience. This development is a significant step forward for the region’s public transport network.
