CFIA Temporarily Bans Texas Livestock to Stop Screwworm Spread

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has enacted temporary restrictions on livestock entering Canada from parts of the United States. This decision follows the detection of screwworm, a harmful parasite, in a Texas calf.
Details of the Ban
As of Friday, the CFIA announced that animals, including horses, that have been in Texas within the last 21 days will be prohibited from crossing into Canada. This action highlights the spread of New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, which was confirmed in Texas, marking the first occurrence in the United States since the 1960s.
Understanding the Screwworm Threat
The New World screwworm is primarily found in South America and the Caribbean. The larvae of this parasitic fly burrow into the skin and feed on the living tissue of their hosts, which can also include humans on rare occasions. Historically, an effective eradication program eliminated the screwworm’s presence in North and Central America by the mid-2000s. However, an outbreak has recently emerged in Mexico, raising concerns about potential spread.
U.S. and Canadian Response
- The CFIA is coordinating closely with U.S. officials to monitor the situation.
- Several U.S. states are implementing measures to mitigate the risk of infestation.
- The CFIA reassured that while the cooler Canadian climate is not suitable for the long-term establishment of the fly, it can survive for shorter durations during summer months.
Precautions for Livestock Owners
Livestock owners and veterinarians are advised to watch for signs of screwworm infestations. Symptoms include:
- Wounds that progressively worsen.
- Discharge or a foul odor from affected areas.
The New World screwworm is classified as an immediately notifiable disease under the Health of Animals Act. If animal owners suspect an infestation, they should consult a veterinarian without delay. Confirmation of the parasite can only be made through laboratory testing, which requires reporting to the CFIA.
