Ontario Restaurant Owner’s Killer Apologizes After Guilty Manslaughter Plea

During a resolution hearing in Owen Sound, Ontario, three British men faced charges linked to the fatal incident involving local restaurant owner Sharif Rahman. The hearing occurred on Friday, with the men pleading guilty in connection with Rahman’s death in August 2023.

Details of the Case

The individuals involved include Robert Evans Jr., who pleaded guilty to manslaughter. His father, Robert Busby Evans, and his uncle, Barry Evans, were charged as accessories after the fact.

Sentencing Proposals

In the hearing, the Crown and defense proposed a 42-month sentence for Robert Evans Jr. and 21-month sentences for both his father and uncle. Justice Christopher Chorney accepted this joint submission, stating the sentences were appropriate given the circumstances.

  • Robert Evans Jr.: 42-month sentence for manslaughter.
  • Robert Busby Evans: 21-month sentence as accessory.
  • Barry Evans: 21-month sentence as accessory.

On the Apology

During the proceedings, Robert Evans Jr. expressed remorse for the tragic outcome. He acknowledged Rahman as a respected family man within the community. “This never should have happened. I didn’t mean for him to die. … I’m sickened by the damage that I’ve caused,” he stated.

Incident Background

The incident leading to Rahman’s death involved an altercation outside his restaurant, The Curry House, following a dispute over a bill. Rahman succumbed to his injuries a week later at a hospital in London, Ontario.

Fleeing the Scene

After the incident, the Evans family quickly left Canada, an act noted by Justice Chorney as indicative of their understanding of the severity of the situation. They were extradited last October and have remained in custody since then.

Next Steps

Due to the significant pretrial custody credit accrued, Robert Busby Evans and Barry Evans will remain in custody while they await transfer to the Canada Border Services Agency for deportation to the United Kingdom. Robert Evans Jr. will have his sentencing hearing scheduled for the morning of July 10.
