Riga Airport’s Passenger Growth Plans Face Significant Challenges

Riga Airport aims to serve between 7.1 million and 7.2 million passengers in 2023. However, this target faces significant challenges due to geopolitical and economic factors, as highlighted by Airport CEO Laila Odiņa.
Key Challenges for Passenger Growth at Riga Airport
During an interview on TV3’s 900 sekundes, Odiņa emphasized the ongoing closure of the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian markets as a major hurdle to achieving passenger growth. The lack of direct flights to destinations like Dubai and Tel Aviv could potentially result in a loss of approximately 100,000 travelers.
Impact of Rising Aviation Fuel Prices
One of the most pressing issues affecting air travel is the sharp increase in aviation fuel prices. This surge forces airlines to reevaluate route profitability and expansion strategies. Odiņa noted, “New airlines are entering Riga Airport very slowly and in very small numbers,” indicating the challenges in attracting new carriers.
Monitoring Fuel Supply Risks
The airport remains vigilant about fuel supply risks, particularly following recent conflicts in the Middle East. Initial concerns suggested that aviation fuel reserves could diminish quickly, as around 40% of Europe’s supply is transported via the Strait of Hormuz. Fortunately, recent consultations revealed that supplies should remain adequate through the summer season.
Importance of airBaltic
Riga Airport is closely intertwined with the national airline, airBaltic, which constitutes roughly 58% of the airport’s passenger traffic and about 40% of its revenues. Odiņa acknowledged that airBaltic’s stability is crucial, but contingency plans are in place to adapt to any financial difficulties the airline may face. She stated, “It would take time, but in the long term it would not be critical for the airport.”
