Exploring Zellers: A Journey Through Its Historical Legacy

Zellers, a flagship discount department store in Canada, has undergone numerous transformations in its nearly 100-year history. Originally founded in 1928, Zellers is currently in a phase of revitalization with plans for national expansion.

The Founding and Early Years of Zellers

Walter Philip Zeller established the first Zellers store in Waterloo, Ontario, in 1928. Just months after its inception, American firm Schulte-United Ltd. took ownership. However, in 1931, Schulte-United filed for bankruptcy, allowing Zeller to reclaim his stores.

Key Milestones in Zellers History

  • 1954: Zeller sells a 50% stake to W.T. Grant Co., an American retailer.
  • 1957: Walter Zeller passes away, leaving a legacy intertwined with the brand.
  • 1976: W.T. Grant goes bankrupt; Fields Stores Ltd. acquires a controlling interest in Zellers.
  • 1978: Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) acquires a majority stake in Zellers.
  • 1990: Zellers expands by acquiring discount chain Towers, which operates as Bonimart in Quebec.
  • 1998: HBC purchases Kmart with the intention of converting its locations to Zellers.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects

The retail landscape changed dramatically in the 2000s. In 2008, Richard Baker, a U.S. businessman, acquired HBC. By 2011, HBC intended to sell most Zellers leases to Target Corp. for its Canadian expansion. Target opened its first store in Canada in 2013 but exited the market by 2015.

The majority of Zellers locations closed in 2013, and by 2020, only liquidation outlets remained operational. HBC’s attempt to defend the Zellers trademark included a lawsuit against the Moniz family in 2021 after their trademark applications.

The Relaunch of Zellers

In 2023, HBC announced a revival of the Zellers brand, introducing pop-up stores in various HBC locations. This move reflects a strategic effort to reconnect with Canadian consumers and re-establish its historical legacy.
