AFN Establishes Standards for Commonwealth Games Trials

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced the national trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Scheduled from June 20 to 22, the event will be held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
Commonwealth Games Event Overview
The upcoming Commonwealth Games are set to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, in Glasgow, Scotland. This three-day national trial aims to gather both home-based and foreign-based athletes, showcasing Nigeria’s best talent in athletics.
Trial Details and Qualification Standards
The national trials will include a total of 32 track and field events for men and women. However, participation in the 100m, 200m, and 400m events will be limited to those athletes who meet the specified qualification standards between April and June 2026. All other events will remain open for any athletes to participate.

- For Home-Based Athletes:
- Men’s 100m: 10.60s
- Women’s 100m: 11.55s
- Men’s 200m: 21.85s
- Women’s 200m: 23.75s
- Men’s 400m: 48.50s
- Women’s 400m: 54.50s
- For Foreign-Based Athletes:
- Men’s 100m: 10.05s
- Women’s 100m: 11.17s
- Men’s 200m: 20.48s
- Women’s 200m: 22.60s
- Men’s 400m: 45.50s
- Women’s 400m: 51.30s
Support and Accommodations for Athletes
The AFN will provide accommodation for athletes who meet the required standards during the qualification period. A list of qualified athletes is anticipated to be published shortly.
AFN President Tonobok Okowa expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the National Sports Commission. He emphasized how this aid has played a crucial role in enhancing athletics development and boosting performance among Nigerian athletes.
