Tesla Under Investigation for Self-Driving Cars on Wrong Side of Road

Tesla is currently under investigation by the US government due to serious concerns regarding its self-driving technology. Reports indicate that Tesla vehicles have been involved in violations such as driving on the incorrect side of the road and failing to stop at red lights.

Investigation Details

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has noted 58 incidents of such violations. This investigation encompasses approximately 2.9 million Tesla cars equipped with the company’s full self-driving technology.

Scope of Investigation

The NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation aims to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety risks associated with Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” mode. This feature, which is available for an additional cost, enables vehicles to perform lane changes and turns autonomously. However, drivers must remain alert and ready to take control at any moment.

Reported Incidents

The NHTSA’s report highlights six crashes attributable to Tesla vehicles failing to adhere to traffic signals. In these incidents, cars began moving when the light remained red, resulting in four injuries. Notably, the agency has stated that Tesla took steps to address issues related to vehicles not stopping at red lights in a specific Maryland intersection where violations were frequent.

Additional Investigations

  • Vehicles making turns into oncoming traffic.
  • Reports where drivers received little notice to intervene during dangerous maneuvers.

Furthermore, Tesla is facing scrutiny over its door locking mechanisms, following reports of children becoming trapped inside Model Y cars. In severe cases, owners felt compelled to break windows to free those inside.

Tesla’s Market Strategy

As the company navigates these challenges, Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular models. This move aims to enhance its competitiveness against lower-priced electric vehicles, particularly those manufactured by Chinese companies.

Elon Musk’s Political Involvement

Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has gained significant wealth, was once an ally of former President Donald Trump but has since distanced himself. In July, he launched a new political party called the America Party, highlighting his shift in political alignment as he attempts to offer an alternative to the current Republican and Democratic parties.
