Saddleback Enters Administration Amid Tough Market Conditions: Future of UK Cycling Distributor?

Saddleback, a prominent distributor of prestigious cycling brands in the UK, has entered administration due to challenging market circumstances. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Yate, near Bristol, the company recently lost key partnerships, leading to its closure.
Saddleback Enters Administration
Administrators Jonathan Dunn and Matt Whitchurch have been appointed for the firm, which had suffered a significant blow earlier this year when Cannondale withdrew from its distribution. Cannondale’s departure in March saw the brand return to a direct-to-dealer model in the UK.
Impact on Employment and Brands
The closure of Saddleback has resulted in the loss of 42 jobs. Employees were notified on a Friday, just after unsuccessful attempts to refinance the business. Dunn emphasized the priority of assisting those affected in accessing financial support.
- Key Brands Affected:
- Pivot
- Castelli
- Sportful
- Silca
- Abbey Bike Tools
- Feedback Sports
- Recent Departures:
- Cannondale – March
- ENVE – February
- 3T – 2020
Previously, Cannondale’s partnership was celebrated as “transformative,” contributing significantly to a turnover increase of around £10 million. However, with both Cannondale and ENVE exiting, Saddleback could no longer maintain its operational costs.
Future Prospects for Brands and Staff
Following the administration announcement, Troy Lee Designs has decided to transition its UK distribution to Silverfish. The developments have raised concerns among former employees, with some already seeking new job opportunities.
Despite the grim outlook, the existing portfolio of high-end brands linked to Saddleback may still entice potential buyers. However, any interested distributor would need to act swiftly to prevent further brand exits.
Saddleback’s website currently features an ‘opening soon’ banner, signaling the uncertainty surrounding its future operations. Efforts to find a buyer had commenced before the decision to appoint administrators was finalized.
