Builder’s Family Urges DIY Safety After Three-Storey Fall

The family of Scott Blankley, a 47-year-old builder from Bristol, is advocating for DIY safety following a severe accident. Blankley sustained significant injuries after falling three storeys while painting an external wall on January 17, 2026. His injuries included 11 broken ribs, a brain bleed, and damage to his lung and kidneys. Recently, part of his skull was replaced with a metal plate to address brain swelling.
Accident Details
Scott was performing a home project when the incident occurred. His brother Kai expressed that although Scott is experienced in the building trade, he may not have applied the same safety measures at home. Kai pointed out that no one was monitoring the base of the ladder, and Scott was not properly secured.
Impact of DIY Projects
Scott is currently on the road to recovery following his accident. The No Falls Foundation, a charity focused on preventing falls, has noted a rise in DIY-related accidents. Over 40,000 individuals suffered injuries from falls at work last year. However, the foundation indicates that a significant number of these incidents occur in domestic settings, often overlooked.
Safety Recommendations
- Always have a spotter at the ladder base.
- Use appropriate safety equipment.
- Evaluate your competence for the task.
- Avoid taking unnecessary risks.
As summer approaches, many people may embark on home improvement projects. Hannah Williams from the No Falls Foundation stressed the importance of careful planning before starting any DIY task. “Accidents can occur in the blink of an eye,” she noted. “Ensure you are equipped and ready to tackle the job safely.”
