Canucks Appoint Manny Malhotra as New Head Coach

The Vancouver Canucks have appointed Manny Malhotra as the franchise’s 23rd head coach, according to sources. This decision marks a significant milestone in the team’s ongoing transformation.

Manny Malhotra’s Coaching Background

Manny Malhotra returns to the Canucks following a successful stint as the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks. In the 2024-25 season, he led the team to a Calder Cup victory. Prior to his tenure in Abbotsford, Malhotra spent three years as an assistant coach for the Canucks from 2017 to 2020 and four years with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2020 to 2024.

Transition in the Coaching Staff

The change in leadership follows the dismissal of Adam Foote, who struggled in his first season, ending with a dismal record of 25-49-8. At 46 years old, Malhotra brings extensive experience to the role, having played 14 seasons in the NHL, including three with the Canucks.

Off-Season Changes in Vancouver

This hiring of Malhotra is part of a broader reorganization within the Canucks’ management. The team also parted ways with General Manager Patrik Allvin after the recent season. Ryan Johnson, previously the assistant GM, has been promoted to take on the GM responsibilities.

Key decisions, including Johnson’s promotion, were made by legends Daniel and Henrik Sedin, who have taken on the roles of co-presidents of hockey operations.

Upcoming NHL Draft

Additionally, Jim Rutherford, the current president of hockey operations, announced on May 6 that he will transition to an advisory role after the upcoming draft. The Canucks own the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft, setting the stage for an important off-season.
