Canada Faces Uzbekistan in Monday Friendly Amid Injury Concerns on TSN

As Canada’s men’s national soccer team gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they will face Uzbekistan in a friendly match on Monday. The game kicks off at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, with pre-game coverage starting at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, available on El-Balad.
Injury Concerns Ahead of the Match
In preparation for the upcoming tournament, Canada has faced significant injury challenges. Coach Jesse Marsch’s squad has seen several key players sidelined, which has raised concerns about their readiness. Most recently, Marcelo Flores suffered a rupture of his ACL while playing for Tigres UANL in the Concacaf Champions Cup final, leading to his withdrawal from the tournament.
Player Injuries and Replacements
With the World Cup approaching, Marsch has limited time to find suitable replacements. He has until June 11, one day before facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, to fill the gap left by Flores. Candidates for this role include:
- Jayden Nelson
- Daniel Jebbison
- Junior Hoilett
Despite injury setbacks, some players are making a return. Defender Richie Laryea is set to play against Uzbekistan after recovering from a thigh injury. Additionally, Moïse Bombito is expected to gain playing time as he recovers from a fractured tibia sustained last October.
Starting Lineup and Strategic Decisions
Marsch confirmed that midfielders Ali Ahmed and Jacob Shaffelburg will not participate due to ongoing injuries. Most players are expected to play for 45 minutes, with several substitutions planned at halftime.
Canada’s star player, Alphonso Davies, is also dealing with a hamstring injury and will not be in the lineup against Uzbekistan. His availability for the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina remains uncertain.
Goalkeeping Choices
One major decision for Marsch is who will start as goalkeeper. Maxime Crépeau of Orlando City is set to begin the game against Uzbekistan, while Dayne St. Clair from Inter Miami will take over in the second half. This setup allows Marsch to evaluate both goalkeepers as the team prepares for the World Cup.
Following the friendly against Uzbekistan, Canada will also compete against Ireland in another preparatory match later this week.
