Haydock Launches Investigation Following Saturday’s Hole Incident

Investigations have commenced at Haydock Park following a significant disruption during a recent racing event. On Saturday, a horse named Friendly Soul encountered a hole approximately two and a half furlongs from the finish line during the Hedge of Oak Stakes. This incident highlighted severe drainage issues at the track, prompting immediate action from the course’s management.

Haydock Investigation Details

After the incident, the management team, led by clerk of the course Dan Cooper, initiated excavations to identify the underlying problems. The situation required the re-scheduling of the sprint races, which were relocated to the inside course, while other round-course races were canceled. A subsequent inspection at 1 PM on Tuesday led officials to cancel racing for both Friday and Saturday, as the inside track proved unsuitable for upcoming fixtures.

Collaboration with Experts

In light of the ongoing issues, professional agronomists have joined the investigation team. Cooper stated that they have detailed GPS mappings of the drainage system, which dates back to the rail realignment project. This data assists in identifying potential weaknesses in the drainage infrastructure.

  • Excavation began with two diggers and a large tractor on site.
  • Cooper noted varying soil profiles and drainage systems spaced every two to five meters.
  • The area has a complex history, with the racecourse operational since 1899.

Future Planning

Looking ahead, Haydock’s next race is scheduled for June 20. Cooper expressed cautious optimism regarding the track’s readiness for this event. He emphasized the importance of assessing the excavations thoroughly before making long-term decisions on repairs.

Cooper remarked on the unpredictable nature of the situation, stating, “We’re working on this week-by-week. We don’t have answers yet from the excavations.” The team is set to reinstate the track surface before conducting a comprehensive survey to understand the extent of necessary repairs.

As Haydock addresses these challenges, they remain committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of the racecourse for future events.
