Southern Alberta Braces for Flooding Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Southern Alberta is preparing for potential flooding due to an unusual combination of warm temperatures and significant rainfall forecasted for the weekend. Communities are advised to remain vigilant as they anticipate up to 100 millimetres of rain starting Saturday night and continuing into early next week.
Weather Forecast and Impacts
Environment Canada predicts Calgary will experience a high of 27°C on Friday, approximately 10 degrees above the seasonal average. This temperature is expected to drop to around 10°C by Sunday.
The melting snowpack in the mountains is contributing to rising river levels, increasing the risk of flooding.
Flood Watch Issued
- A flood watch has been declared for the Pipestone River and Bow River near Lake Louise.
- A high streamflow advisory is in effect for the Bow River from Banff to the Ghost Reservoir, approximately 60 kilometers west of Calgary.
Emergency officials in Banff are deploying temporary flood barriers in areas likely to be impacted by rising waters. Some trails and low-lying spots in Lake Louise are already experiencing flooding.
Precautions and Alerts
In Calgary, emergency management is monitoring the Bow and Elbow Rivers closely. A boating advisory has been issued to caution against water activities on these rivers.
Officials warn that with a forecast of 50 to 90 millimeters of rain for Calgary, localized flooding may occur in certain communities, especially in the southwest and near Lethbridge.
Advice for Residents
- Ensure that eavestroughs and extensions direct water away from homes.
- Report any pooling water to local authorities.
- Be cautious of trail conditions, especially on slopes.
Mark Svenson, environment manager in Lethbridge, noted that while the Old Man River is experiencing slightly elevated levels, they remain within the normal range for this time of year. Residents are advised to prepare for significant rain while staying alert to changing water conditions.
Weather Advisory
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement. Rain is expected to persist until Tuesday, with mountain areas potentially receiving up to 20 centimeters of snow.
As communities brace for potential flooding, it is crucial for residents to remain informed and take necessary precautions.
