Penticton Evacuees Face Safety Risks from Damaged Crane After Fire

A recent fire at a construction site in Penticton, British Columbia, has raised significant safety concerns for the community. The blaze, which broke out late Wednesday, completely destroyed a long-term care home that was under construction along Green Avenue, near Highway 97. The site previously belonged to the estate of businessman David Kampe.
Penticton Evacuees Face Risks from Damaged Crane
The intensity of the fire prompted the evacuation of 16 homes in the vicinity, as embers spread and flames endangered a large crane on-site. This led to fears that the crane could collapse, prompting the City of Penticton to declare a local state of emergency on Thursday. Mike Larsson, the city’s fire chief, emphasized the necessity of emergency powers to manage the situation.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
While six residents have returned home, ten properties remain under evacuation orders. Four of these houses suffered damage, and six others are at risk should the crane fall. Anthony Haddad, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) director, confirmed that Emergency Support Services teams have been working to assist displaced residents.
- 16 homes evacuated due to fire risks.
- Four homes damaged, six at risk from crane.
- Emergency Operations Centre activated for safety measures.
The primary objective for city officials is to safely dismantle the damaged crane before allowing residents to return. Larsson stated that plans are in progress, and there is hope to address the crane situation by next week.
Future of Skaha Seniors Village
Despite the challenges, Kaigo Seniors Living, the developer, is committed to completing the Skaha Seniors Village, a facility that will provide 200 beds. Wendy Calhoun, director of operations for the company, expressed confidence that the project, which was initially ahead of schedule, could continue with minimal delays. Updated estimates suggest the project could now be completed by late 2028.
As the investigation into the fire’s cause continues, officials have obtained security footage and are collaborating with local authorities. Residents are reminded to avoid the area until the crane is safely removed and the state of emergency is lifted.
