Gardiner Expressway Closes Sunday Amid Major TTC, GO Train Service Suspensions

Toronto is gearing up for an eventful weekend featuring significant road closures and transit changes. Four major concerts and a popular cycling event will take place, impacting travel across the city. Below are the essential details for navigating the disruptions.

Major Road Closures

The Gardiner Expressway will experience a full closure on Sunday, starting at 2 a.m., due to the Bike for Brain Health event. This event begins at 6 a.m. and necessitates the closure of the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) as well.

  • DVP Closure: Closed from Lake Shore Boulevard to Highway 401 in both directions.
  • Gardiner Expressway Closure: All lanes shut from South Kingsway to the base of the DVP.

Both highways are expected to reopen by 4 p.m., potentially creating congestion for those attending concerts by Diljit Dosanjh at Rogers Centre and A$AP Rocky at Scotiabank Arena.

Weekend Concerts and Impact on Traffic

While the DVP and Gardiner will be closed on Sunday, they will be fully operational on Saturday. However, there will be lane closures on Lake Shore Boulevard between Yonge Street and Raptors Way, affecting traffic throughout the weekend.

Transit Service Suspensions

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will temporarily suspend service on a significant segment of Line 2. This suspension concerns eight stations, extending from Jane to Ossington.

  • Closed Stations: Runnymede, High Park, Lansdowne, and Dufferin.
  • Shuttle Buses: Available on Saturday and Sunday to replace subway service.

All other stations along the route will remain open for fare purchases and access to surface transit.

GO Train Service Disruptions

GO Transit will face service suspensions on both the Barrie and Lakeshore West lines this weekend due to planned construction. Key details include:

  • Lakeshore West Line: No service between Aldershot in Burlington and Mimico stations.
  • Replacement Buses: Available from West Harbour Station to Bramalea Station, where riders can switch to the Kitchener Line to Union Station.
  • Barrie Line: No service at Downsview Park GO Station.

Shuttle buses will operate between Allandale Waterfront GO and the Highway 407 Bus Terminal, allowing connections to the TTC for access to concert venues.

With all these changes, residents and visitors are advised to plan their travels carefully this weekend to avoid delays.
