Matthew Tkachuk Vows to Avoid World Championships for NHL Playoffs

Matthew Tkachuk, a forward for the Florida Panthers, has firmly stated his intention to avoid the World Championships in favor of the NHL Playoffs. His commitment comes after the Panthers’ impressive run to the Stanley Cup Final for three consecutive seasons.
Matthew Tkachuk’s Stance on World Championships
The World Championships take place in Europe while the Stanley Cup Playoffs are ongoing in North America. This event typically attracts NHL players whose teams did not qualify for the postseason or who were eliminated early. However, Tkachuk’s recent success with the Panthers has made participation in the tournament an afterthought.
Focus on the Stanley Cup
After the United States’ quarterfinal loss to Canada, Tkachuk expressed his frustration about competing in the World Championships. He stated, “I never want to be back in this tournament. I want to be playing in playoffs.” His preference for playoff hockey is understandable, given the Panthers’ deep playoff runs.
Recent Accomplishments
Since joining the Panthers, Tkachuk has made the Stanley Cup Final in each of his three seasons, with victories in both 2024 and 2025. Before his tenure in Florida, Tkachuk had playoff appearances in all but two seasons with the Calgary Flames.
Performance at the World Championship
- Tournament Participation: Tkachuk played five games.
- Goals Scored: He netted four goals.
- Total Points: He recorded seven points.
Tkachuk emphasized that if he finds himself back at the World Championships, he would prefer a rematch against Canada. However, his primary focus remains on achieving further success with the Florida Panthers in the NHL Playoffs.
