Alberta Faces Severe Thunderstorms with Hail and Strong Wind Threats

Alberta is bracing for severe thunderstorms, with risks of hail and strong winds looming over several areas. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has indicated that thunderstorms could impact various regions today, May 28, as the province approaches June and enters its storm season.
Thunderstorm Outlook and Risks
The ECCC’s Storm Prediction Centre has outlined a moderate weather risk spanning two main sections of Alberta:
- Foothills Region: Wind gusts may reach up to 90 kilometers per hour. Hail could be as large as 2.5 centimeters, with anticipated rainfall of up to 40 millimeters.
- Eastern Alberta: Areas including Lloydminster might also experience wind gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, hail up to 3 centimeters, and rainfall of up to 50 millimeters.
On the other hand, the Edmonton area appears to be less affected today. However, cities such as Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat could encounter storms featuring wind gusts reaching 70 kilometers per hour and hail up to 2 centimeters in size.
Future Thunderstorm Activity
The threat of thunderstorm activity is not limited to today. A potential follow-up round of storms is anticipated, bringing:
- Wind gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour.
- Hail ranging from 1 to 2 centimeters.
- Rainfall between 20 to 30 millimeters in areas including Edmonton, Red Deer, Lloydminster, and Edson.
Looking ahead, meteorologists are also monitoring Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, and Banff National Park for possible storm activity tomorrow, June 1. Similar hazards are expected there, with wind gusts reaching 70 kilometers per hour and hail sizes from 1 to 2 centimeters.
