Ferrari Unveils First Electric Vehicle with Speed, Sound, and Jony Ive Design

Ferrari is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle market with the unveiling of its first electric car, the Elettrica. This much-anticipated model, expected to debut fully in 2024, was introduced at the company’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy. The Elettrica promises an exciting combination of power, innovation, and design.

Performance Specifications

The Ferrari Elettrica will feature four electric motors, one for each wheel, producing over 1,000 horsepower. This power places it in the same league as the company’s recently launched F80 supercar. However, Ferrari acknowledges that in today’s world of 2,000-hp electric vehicles, this figure may not be groundbreaking.

Advanced Driving Capabilities

Gianmaria Fulgenzi, Ferrari’s chief product development officer, emphasized that cornering performance is critical. He noted that many performance EVs struggle with dynamics, describing them as “elephants” that excel in straight lines but lack finesse in handling.

To enhance stability and traction, the Elettrica’s four motors will enable precise modulation of power to each tire. Additionally, the car will feature independent steering for the rear wheels to improve maneuverability. The active suspension, which debuted on the Purosangue SUV, will allow for real-time adjustments, ensuring a unique driving experience that Ferrari enthusiasts expect.

Sound Design

A distinctive sound is integral to the identity of the Ferrari brand. To ensure authenticity, engineers opted against artificially generated noises. Instead, they will use an innovative approach similar to that of Porsche’s Taycan. The Elettrica will incorporate an accelerometer within the rear motors to capture their unique acoustic characteristics, enhancing the connection between the driver and the vehicle.

Design and Practicality

While specific design details remain under wraps, Ferrari has collaborated with the design firm LoveFrom, headed by Jony Ive, known for his minimalist aesthetics. The Elettrica will feature four doors and seating for four, positioning it between a grand tourer and an SUV, offering both comfort and practicality.

Battery and Range

The Elettrica will be powered by a 122 kWh battery pack, divided into 15 modules. It will deliver an impressive range of over 330 miles. Although the battery cells are sourced from SK On, Ferrari plans to evolve its design and chemistry, ensuring longevity and sustainability.

A Brand New Era for Ferrari
