Family Discovers Deceased Father in Morgue Two Months Later

A shocking incident unfolded at the Larnaca General Hospital when a family discovered their deceased father in the morgue nearly two months after his passing. The man’s son, Klaudios Antoniou, revealed that their search began after his father was reportedly admitted for cancer treatment on March 19. Unfortunately, the family was not notified about his admission.

Unanswered Calls and Confusion

Antoniou described his father as an independent individual who often preferred solitude, living and traveling abroad for extended periods. On March 26, the hospital made two phone calls to the family, which went unanswered. When they returned the calls, staff claimed there was no record of his father being admitted.

  • The family received conflicting information, stating the patient was neither admitted nor had he checked out.
  • They were eventually informed that he had died on March 26 at 10:50 AM.

Frustrated and exhausted, the family contacted various hospitals and relatives in their search, but all efforts proved fruitless until they sought police assistance to verify hospital records.

Discovery of the Body

Last Thursday, following police intervention, the family discovered the body in the morgue, categorized as unclaimed. They were informed that their father had not been logged in the hospital’s systems during their earlier inquiries. This raised serious questions regarding the hospital’s procedures for documenting patient admissions and deaths.

  • The family was told that patient records are deleted after a person’s death.
  • This policy raised inconsistencies with the timeline presented to them regarding their father’s care.

Lack of Communication

Antoniou emphasized that despite the two calls made by the hospital, there were no further attempts to reach out to the family. “There was absolutely no other attempt,” he lamented, explaining how this lapse robbed them of the opportunity to give their father a proper burial.

Upon retrieving the body, the family encountered further distress as they received it in a closed coffin due to the state of the remains, alongside a lack of explanations during the process.

Ongoing Investigation

In response to the troubling circumstances surrounding this case, the family has filed a complaint with Okypy, urging an investigation into the hospital’s handling of their father’s admission and subsequent death.
