Romanian Army Explains Constraints in Drone Incident Over Galați Building

Romanian military officials have recently addressed the constraints faced during a drone incident in Galați. The event occurred on a Friday night when a drone crashed into a residential building, followed by an explosion and fire in an apartment on the tenth floor. This incident has raised questions about the military’s ability to respond to aerial threats.

Overview of the Drone Incident in Galați

At approximately 1:54 AM, radar systems detected a drone entering Romanian airspace from Reni. The drone descended from an altitude of 600 meters and exhibited unusual maneuvers. Shortly after its disappearance from radar, a fire was reported at the site of the crash.

Military Response and Limitations

In a press conference, Cristian Popovici, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), explained why the drone was not intercepted. He stated that the Romanian military operates under strict legal and operational constraints. The primary legal limitation prohibits engaging aerial targets in foreign airspace to avoid escalating threats.

  • The military had only four minutes to assess the situation before the drone impacted.
  • Effective engagement requires time for identification and classification of threats.
  • Romania’s ground-based air defense systems were developed before the current drone warfare era, and updates are in progress.

Popovici emphasized that the military aims to balance national defense with the legal framework that governs their actions. The rules limit the use of weapons against drones from neighboring countries to protect civilian lives and property.

Further Developments

Following the incident, a national alert was raised, and RO-Alert messages were disseminated in Brăila, Tulcea, and Galați. Two F-16 aircraft were mobilized from Fetești Air Base, supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter. Pilots were authorized to engage potential threats during the alert period.

Record of Drone Sightings

Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, fragments of drones have been reported in Romania on 47 occasions, with 12 incidents occurring this year alone. This statistic highlights an ongoing concern regarding aerial security in the region.

In light of these developments, MApN officials will continue to adapt legal frameworks to address drone incidents effectively. They reaffirm their commitment to ensuring national security while respecting the safety of civilians.
