Byron Allen Acquires BuzzFeed, Sets Sights on Competing with YouTube

Byron Allen, a prominent media entrepreneur and comedian, is now the majority owner of BuzzFeed. This acquisition represents a major shift for the struggling digital media company. Allen’s ambitious plan includes creating a free-streaming platform that targets competition with video giant YouTube.

Acquisition Details

Allen acquired approximately 51% of BuzzFeed’s outstanding shares in a deal valued at $120 million. He intends to leverage BuzzFeed’s existing assets to enhance its offerings in video, audio, and user-generated content.

Leadership Changes

With Allen taking the helm as chairman and CEO, Jonah Peretti, BuzzFeed’s founder and former CEO, will now serve as president of BuzzFeed AI. This newly established role will focus on applied AI research, product innovation, and the advancement of technology-driven media formats.

Strategic Vision

Both Allen and Peretti have expressed optimism about the future of BuzzFeed. Peretti described Allen as “a force of nature” and emphasized their shared vision at the intersection of technology and media.

Expansion Plans

Collaboration with Local Now

BuzzFeed plans to collaborate with Allen Media Group’s Local Now, a streaming platform that features localized news and entertainment. This partnership aims to enrich the user experience by providing relevant content based on geographical location.

Financial Aspects of the Deal

The purchase involved Allen Family Digital acquiring 40 million shares at $3 each, totaling $120 million. The transaction was financed with $20 million in cash and a $100 million promissory note due in five years, accruing interest at 5% annually.

BuzzFeed utilized $12.5 million from the transaction to reduce its existing debt burden.

New Projects and Time Slots

In addition to the BuzzFeed acquisition, Allen leased a two-hour nightly comedy block on CBS. His new show, “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen,” airs in the late-night slot previously held by “Late Night With Stephen Colbert.” This move will showcase back-to-back episodes of comedy content, followed by his show “Funny You Should Ask.”

As BuzzFeed embarks on this new chapter under Allen’s leadership, both the company and its founder highlight the vast opportunities ahead, especially in the realm of AI-driven content innovation.
