BYD Unveils Israel’s Most Affordable Plug-In Hybrid Mini

BYD has recently unveiled the Dolphin G, marking a significant entry into the supermini car segment in Israel. This model is noteworthy as it will be the first plug-in hybrid in its category, offering affordability and efficiency.
Specifications of the Dolphin G
The Dolphin G is expected to launch in Israel during the third quarter of the year. It will be positioned below the Atto 2, with an estimated price range of NIS 120,000-130,000, roughly equivalent to $42,400-46,000. This pricing will make it the most affordable plug-in hybrid available in Israel.
Dimensions and Design
Although the Dolphin G is shorter than its electric counterpart, measuring 416 cm (163.8 inches) in length, it boasts a wider frame at 182.5 cm (71.9 inches). The compact dimensions cater to urban drivers who seek maneuverability.
Powertrain Details
- The Dolphin G will feature a hybrid powertrain similar to that of the Atto 2.
- It will be equipped with a front-mounted electric motor generating 197 horsepower (hp).
- A 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine will produce an additional 98 hp, acting as a generator for the battery.
- Two battery options will be available: a 7.8 kWh battery for 166 hp and an electric range of approximately 40 km (24.9 miles); and an 18 kWh battery offering 213 hp with an electric range of about 90 km (55.9 miles).
- The combined range of electricity and gasoline is projected to exceed 1,000 km (621 miles).
Innovation and Market Positioning
Stella Li, BYD’s vice president, highlighted that the Dolphin G is intentionally designed for the European market, diverging from trends seen in China. This model caters to the demand for smaller vehicles in densely populated cities like Paris and London, standing out in a world increasingly focused on larger cars.
As the first plug-in hybrid in its class, the Dolphin G represents a significant step forward in BYD’s strategy, balancing size, performance, and affordability while navigating the challenges of emissions regulations. This innovative approach could redefine what consumers expect from supermini vehicles in Israel and beyond.
