Residents in Wiltshire recently experienced a striking weather phenomenon as temperatures soared amid a thunderstorm warning. On May 26, Tanith Pike visited Westbury’s White Horse during a sweltering 28-degree heat. While there, she witnessed massive clouds forming towards Chippenham.
Tanith captured a stunning photograph of the storm breaking in contrast to the clear skies surrounding her. She described the moment as surreal, noting, “It felt a little apocalyptic!” This unique scene highlighted the rapid change in weather conditions.
Heatwave and Storm Threat in Central England
The UK has been under intense heat, with the Met Office reporting record-breaking temperatures. On May 25, central England experienced the hottest day of the year, exceeding prior records. The Met Office issued warnings for potential thunderstorms, advising that some areas could see up to 30mm of rainfall within an hour.
Continuing Heat and Thunderstorms
- Forecast for May 27: Chippenham is expected to reach temperatures above 30 degrees.
- Swindon: Temperatures are similarly forecasted to exceed 30 degrees, with a chance of rain in the evening.
These weather conditions have been described as “exceptionally” hot by Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill. He emphasized the historic nature of these temperatures for May, traditionally a cooler month.
Health Alerts Issued
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat-health alerts across several regions, including the South West, South East, and East Midlands. Yellow alerts have also been issued for the North West and North East. These warnings highlight the public health risks associated with extreme heat.
The unusual juxtaposition of a heatwave and storm has captivated many, creating a fascinating yet concerning weather dynamic across the UK.
