BYD to Launch in Canada by 2026, Building 20+ Dealerships

BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to make its debut in Canada by late 2026. This expansion involves the establishment of over 20 dealerships in key cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. Stella Li, the executive vice-president and president of BYD Americas, announced this development on social media, aligning with a new trade agreement between Canada and China that is reshaping the Canadian electric vehicle landscape.
Dealership Expansion Plans
The establishment of dealerships marks a significant investment for BYD in Canada, showcasing the company’s commitment to the North American market. The dealerships are expected to open in major urban areas, aiming to increase accessibility to their electric vehicles.
Initial Vehicle Offerings
The first phase of BYD’s vehicle launch will include:
- Atto 3 compact SUV
- Seal sedan
- Dolphin hatchback
A subsequent phase is expected to introduce the Seagull city car, which could be priced around CAD$25,000. If this price holds, it would position the Seagull as one of the most affordable electric vehicle options in Canada.
Impact of Trade Agreements
The timing of BYD’s Canadian expansion is closely linked to a January 2026 trade agreement between Ottawa and Beijing. This agreement replaced the previous 100% tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles with a reduced tariff of 6.1%, operating under an annual quota system. Annually, up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs can enter Canada, with a cap that is set to increase to 70,000 by 2030.
In exchange, China has agreed to reduce tariffs on a range of Canadian agricultural exports, including canola, lobster, crab, and peas.
Market Dynamics
BYD’s entry into the Canadian market is particularly significant for Ontario. Currently, the province holds an electric vehicle market share of approximately 6.5%, which is notably lower than British Columbia and Quebec. Ontario is a major hub for automotive manufacturing and houses significant auto unions.
The expansion into Canada reflects BYD’s strategic planning and adaptation to changing trade relations, setting the stage for a competitive electric vehicle market in the region.
