Kris Sparre Appointed PWHL Hamilton Head Coach

On Wednesday, Kris Sparre was appointed as the first head coach of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) franchise in Hamilton. This announcement follows Sparre’s recent recognition as a finalist for the PWHL’s Coach of the Year award while he was with the Boston Fleet.
Kris Sparre’s Coaching Achievements
In his inaugural season with the Fleet, Sparre led the team to an impressive record of 16 wins, five losses, four overtime losses, and five shootout losses (16-5-4-5). This performance marked the most significant improvement in league history. The Fleet reached the Walter Cup semifinals but were ultimately defeated by the Ottawa Charge with a score of 3-1.
Meghan Duggan, the general manager of PWHL Hamilton, expressed her enthusiasm about Sparre’s appointment. She stated, “Kris brings a combination of hockey knowledge, leadership, and player development expertise that makes him an ideal fit.” She emphasized the importance of building a positive culture and competitive environment for the players.
PWHL Expansion Details
The PWHL has recently expanded, with Hamilton joining Detroit and Las Vegas as new teams set to compete in the 2026/2027 season.
Coaching Background and Personal Life
Before joining the PWHL, the 39-year-old Sparre spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) San Diego Gulls. There, he played a key role in player development for the Anaheim Ducks. His coaching experience also includes time in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and professional leagues in Austria. Sparre began his career as a player in Germany and the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
Recently, he welcomed a new family member, as his wife gave birth to their second child, prompting his desire to relocate closer to home.
Sparre shared his excitement about this new opportunity, stating, “I’m thrilled to build a foundation in Hamilton.” He expressed gratitude towards his time in Boston, acknowledging the relationships he built and the community he was part of during his tenure.
Future for the Boston Fleet
The Boston Fleet are now in search of their third head coach in four seasons. Former head coach Courtney Kessel departed for a position with Princeton University. Fleet GM Danielle Marmer highlighted Sparre’s significant contributions to player development and the team’s culture.
Marmer emphasized the challenge of transitions but also acknowledged that they presented opportunities for growth. The Fleet aims to maintain a team-first culture and hire a coach who aligns with their values and will further elevate the team.
The search for a new head coach is also underway for five other PWHL teams, including existing teams in Toronto and Seattle, as well as expansion franchises in Las Vegas and Detroit.
