Conference League: England Fans Invade Leipzig; Flights Rerouted

Leipzig prepares for a significant influx of English fans as they gather for the Conference League final. The match, featuring Crystal Palace against Rayo Vallecano, is scheduled for Wednesday at 21:00. Approximately 18,000 supporters are expected to travel from the UK for this event.
Changes to Flight Operations
The arrival of thousands of fans is straining the Leipzig airport’s capacity. Authorities anticipate up to 20 additional flights daily leading up to the final. Uwe Schuhart, a spokesperson for the airport, noted that the challenge lies not in airport infrastructure but in handling an unusually high volume of flights and passengers in a short period.
- Passenger transport
- Immigration processes
- Check-in procedures
- Security checks
- Aircraft handling
To manage the surge in traffic, some flights will be redirected to nearby airports in Dresden and Berlin. This adjustment aims to alleviate pressure on local facilities.
Preparations in Leipzig’s Bars and Venues
Local bars and pubs are stocking up on beer to accommodate the enthusiastic English fans. In anticipation of the large turnout, Leipzig’s establishments are prepared to serve plenty of drinks. A fan festival at the market will start on Monday, where beer service can reach up to 550 liters per hour.
At Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, where Crystal Palace fans are expected to convene, provisions have increased from two beer stands to five, providing up to 22,500 liters of beer.
Fan Gatherings and Marches
Unlike past events, a large-scale fan march similar to the one during the European Championship will not occur this time. Crystal Palace’s representatives advised against it, opting for a gathering at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz before fans proceed individually to the stadium.
In contrast, Rayo Vallecano supporters will hold a fan march starting from Richard-Wagner-Platz. Organizers anticipate a peaceful atmosphere between the English fans and around 11,000 fans from Spain.
Security Measures
Despite the anticipated crowd, no immediate changes to security protocols are planned. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a safe environment for all attendees during the final.
