England Set to Challenge May Heat Record with Possible 35°C Temperatures

England is bracing for a potential heatwave this week, with temperatures anticipated to reach 35°C. The expected heat is a continuation of Monday’s sweltering conditions, which are set to intensify as warmer air settles over the region.
Expected Temperature Increases
Forecasters predict that Southeast England will experience the highest temperatures, while areas in England and Wales may reach the high 20s. Northern regions, however, are less likely to face extreme heat compared to earlier in the week.
Weather Conditions
- Most areas will remain dry and sunny throughout the week.
- There is a slight increase in atmospheric moisture.
- Thunderstorms are possible in parts of southern England, East Anglia, and Yorkshire.
Record Temperatures in Wales
Wales recorded its hottest May day on Monday, reaching an impressive 32.2°C at Hawarden Airport in Flintshire. This record contributes to a trend, as over half of the monthly temperature highs have been set since 2003, according to the Met Office.
Heat Alerts Issued
In response to the soaring temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency has issued its first amber heat health alert of 2026. This alert covers significant regions including:
- West Midlands
- East Midlands
- East of England
- South East
- London
Additionally, a yellow alert is in place for the North East, North West, South West, and Yorkshire and Humber regions. Both alerts are valid until 17:00 BST on Wednesday.
Underlying Causes of the Heatwave
Dan Suri, the chief operational meteorologist at the Met Office, attributes these exceptionally high temperatures to a buildup of warm air beneath a high-pressure system near the UK. Typically, the average temperature for late May ranges from 14°C to 20°C.
