Dark Horse Closes Retail Chain Operations

Dark Horse Comics is making significant changes by shutting down its retail chain and launching a new video game division. This transformation marks the first major shift under interim CEO Jay Komas, who took over in March.

Closure of Retail Operations

The company’s retail operations will come to an end this year. This includes the Things from Another World (TFAW) chain, which has three stores. The reasons for this decision are aimed at modernizing the company and fostering collaboration.

  • Two locations in Oregon will shut down on June 30, 2026.
  • The California store at Universal CityWalk, a prime comic store location, will close on September 30, 2026.

Prior to this, Dark Horse had already shut down its e-commerce site last year, signaling a strategic shift away from retail sales.

Establishment of Dark Horse Games

In addition to the retail closures, Dark Horse has announced the launch of Dark Horse Games. This new division aims to adapt Dark Horse properties into interactive entertainment.

The initiative is part of moving forward with creative opportunities for storytellers. According to the company, Dark Horse Games will offer development opportunities and partnerships for creators to bring their narratives to life in gaming formats.

Parent Company Developments

Dark Horse’s parent company, Embracer Group, has revealed plans for the upcoming spin-off of Dark Horse and its associated intellectual properties, including popular franchises like Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider. This is set to take place next year under a new entity called Fellowship Entertainment.

The company’s announcement expressed appreciation for TFAW employees, stating that support will be provided during the transition period.

The Future of Dark Horse

This strategic shift signifies the end of an era for Dark Horse as a retailer, particularly given its roots in the comic business since 1979, when founder Mike Richardson opened the first retail store. The establishment of Dark Horse as a publisher followed shortly thereafter.

As the company moves forward, it aims to strengthen its focus on film and television through its already existing Dark Horse Entertainment division. The organization emphasizes its dedication to supporting its creators in bringing their visions to various media platforms.
