Stephanie Smyth Backs Lee Fairclough in Ontario Liberal Leadership Race

Lee Fairclough, the Liberal Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, is gaining traction in the Ontario Liberal leadership race. Fairclough, who entered the legislature last year, has received endorsements from three caucus members, including Stephanie Smyth, a former broadcaster. Smyth describes Fairclough as the “perfect foil” to current Premier Doug Ford.

Fairclough’s Vision for Ontario

As a former hospital executive and national women’s rugby player, Lee Fairclough positions herself as a reformer dedicated to addressing the province’s pressing challenges. She emphasizes the importance of democracy and integrity in governance.

Endorsements and Support

  • Stephanie Smyth, MPP for Toronto-St. Paul’s
  • Ted Hsu, Kingston MPP
  • Lucille Collard, Ottawa MPP

Fairclough is currently the only candidate in this leadership race who holds a seat in the legislature, a significant advantage as she competes against other candidates like Dylan Marando, a former political staffer.

Recent Political Developments

The leadership race has been shaped by controversies, particularly involving the recent Ontario Liberal nomination race in Scarborough Southwest. Federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith’s loss to businessman Ahsanul Hafiz by just 19 votes has sparked calls for a re-election due to alleged irregularities. An arbitration committee is scheduled to make a decision on this matter shortly.

Challenges Ahead for Ontario Liberals

The Ontario Liberal Party faces a challenging political landscape, coming in third during three consecutive elections since 2018. Under the leadership of Bonnie Crombie, the party regained its status with 14 MPPs in 2025. Fairclough aims to revitalize the party’s image in light of recent government controversies, such as the contentious purchase of a $28.9 million jet and changes to freedom of information laws.

A Leaders’ Responsibilities

Fairclough has introduced a private member’s bill focusing on banning the promotion of online gambling in Ontario. However, the Progressive Conservatives voted against it, highlighting ongoing legislative challenges. Her commitment to health care and education resonates with many voters, as she actively engages with Liberal Party members across the province.

Community Concerns

During her tours in areas like Sarnia, Fairclough has noted constituents’ frustrations with the current government, particularly regarding its perceived focus on Toronto over broader provincial issues. As she contemplates the premier’s plans for regional developments, like the expansion of the Billy Bishop airport, Fairclough stresses the need for a leader who prioritizes all of Ontario.

The Ontario Liberal Party is set to announce its new leader on November 21, as hope for a political resurgence mounts following some disheartening electoral performances in recent years.
