Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Reshuffles Cabinet After Two Resignations

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has initiated a cabinet reshuffle in the wake of two key resignations. Former Finance Minister Nate Horner and Hospitals Minister Matt Jones announced their departures on Wednesday. Both politicians confirmed they will not seek re-election in the upcoming 2027 provincial election.
Key Changes in Alberta’s Cabinet
The new Finance Minister, Jason Nixon, possesses over a decade of legislative experience. Previously, Nixon held the position of Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services. His political journey began in 2015 with the Wildrose Party, which later merged with the Progressive Conservatives to form the United Conservative Party (UCP) in 2017.
- Jason Nixon: New Finance Minister, past roles include Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services.
- Nathan Neudorf: New Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, previously handled affordability and utilities.
- Adriana LaGrange: Sworn in as the new Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services after leaving Preventative Health Care.
- Justin Wright: Takes over as Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services, succeeding LaGrange.
- Tara Sawyer: Former Grain Growers of Canada chair becomes Agriculture Minister, following R.J. Sigurdson, who is now Minister of Affordability and Utilities.
Nixon’s appointment to the finance portfolio comes at a crucial time. The province is currently facing a projected budget deficit of $9.4 billion, marking the largest shortfall since the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, analysts suggest that if oil prices remain favorable, Alberta could potentially shift toward a surplus.
The Opposition Response
The reshuffle has drawn criticism from Naheed Nenshi, the leader of Alberta’s NDP opposition. He expressed skepticism about the cabinet changes, arguing they fail to address pressing issues faced by Albertans. Nenshi pointed out that the cabinet remains the largest in Alberta’s history and questioned its effectiveness in tackling the cost-of-living crisis. He voiced concerns regarding the management of public health and criticized ongoing policies related to coal mining and indigenous relations.
Promotions Within the Cabinet
The recent reshuffle also included promotions for two backbenchers:
- Brandon Lunty: Appointed as the new Government Whip.
- Scott Cyr: Named Parliamentary Secretary for Transportation.
This cabinet reshuffle signifies Premier Smith’s attempt to strengthen her administration amidst ongoing challenges in the province.
